Take a trip down memory lane...
The destination? Penwortham in the early 1980s. With change afoot across the country, here we’ve put together our best archive pictures of what was going on locally in the first half of what was to prove to be a very dynamic decade indeed.
Teacher Miss Margaret Shuttleworth has retired after 32 years in the classroom in the Preston area. Staff and pupils at Middleforth Primary in Penwortham, where she has spent the last 13 years, presented her with a clock radio, a necklace and a watch - so she can keep her eye on her newly found leisure time Photo: RETRO
Penwortham Power Station from top of grain elevator. The new coal conveyor seen in this photograph was brought into use in 1947 and replaced an aerial cable bucket system that was built with the original RGS No.1 plant in 1925. This new conveyor was 84' above HWM and had a span of 340'. Cooling water for the plant was taken from and returned to the Albert Edward Basin in two 6 1/2 ' tunnels bored below the river at 1050' and 1700' in length. Because of this warm water discharge into the dock basin the water really never froze until the plant was decommissioned in the 1980's. Photo: PDA
Lovely Louise Barlow has scooped her first national beauty contest win - after years gracing the local shop-floor circuit. And the high-flying win for the British Aerospace clerk, based at Warton, has landed just nicely... for her 20th birthday. For Louise, of Whitefield Drive, Penwortham, used her winning smile to defeat 12 other lovelies in the national Miss British Aerospace contest Photo: RETRO
Teenager Fiona Haworth often finds herself the centre of attraction with the lads... especially when it comes to making a splash in the swimming world. Fiona, 13, is the only girl in Lancashire playing competitive water polo. Fiona, of Factory Lane, Penwortham, stepped into the Preston Piranha under-16 side in an emergency, but is now a regular Photo: RETRO
