They won 9-0 at Deepdale on May 7, 1966, some statistic bearing in mind their biggest win that season to date had been a 4-1 success.
There were hat-tricks for both Ernie Hannigan and Brian Godfrey, with Brian Greenhalgh scoring twice and Nobby Lawton also finding the net.
North End were five goals to the good by half-time.

Hide AdHannigan opened the scoring in the eighth minute with Lawton and Greenhalgh adding to the lead.
By the interval Hannigan had his hat-trick, netting in the 39th and 44th minute.
Godfrey's treble was squeezed into a five-minute spell, that almost certainly the fastest PNE hat-trick in a league game.
The Welshman struck in the 71st, 73rd and 76th minute, a remarkable achievement.

Ironically, the biggest win of the season was watched by North End's lowest league crowd that campign, with 10,018 fans well entertained.
PNE finished 17th that season, with the best moments reserved for the FA Cup.
They had a run to the sixth round where they bowed out in a replay against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Hide AdTheir cup exploits started with a 3-2 win at Charlton, before they beat Bolton in the fourth round after a replay.
In the fifth round, they beat First Division Tottenham Hotspur at Deepdale, Hannigan and Alex Dawson scoring.
Then came United, the sides drawing 1-1 at Deepdale with former Red Devils striker Dawson on target for Preston.
Four days later, United won the replay 3-1 in front of a crowd of 60,433. PNE's goal came from Tony Singleton.
